B. 1992, British born in Hong Kong.
Stubbs began as a illustrator and soon turned to ceramics and working with sculpture. As Stubbs continues to develop her work the unrestrained surface of ceramic continues to give her the freedom in her practice. With a background in Classical Civilisations and a fascination with the Greek tradition of storytelling through plates and vases, the ceramic forms are pregnant with socio-historical associations. By continuing her desire for narrative in ceramics Stubbs creates contemporary stories stemmed from Classical Civilisation.
Stubbs explores the strangeness in the world around her and through a juxtaposition of familiar, domestic form and the unfamiliar, she brings a dark humour to her work. Despite the industrial or commercial–packets of mustards and matches–her work is very much situated within a handmade tradition.
